Important Dates…

.
Sometimes important days come and go.  Like my due date(Which was yesterday.) This baby will officially be a March baby……not a February one like we had hoped.  Little stinker.  We’re still hanging on for her to come but wow it’s hard to wait out these last few days (or another week?  Eek!).  I really am learning some patience.  Now grace, that’s what I may need to work on.
I do have to say, I am a bit nervous that this baby girl will come out a linebacker.
And what sort of girl wants to come out a linebacker?
My 4 year old girl weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces at birth.  And my almost 3 year old boy weighed 9 pounds 10 ounces (both induced right about their due dates)……..and this one?  I don’t know.  But I feel bigger than I did with the other two.  I’m pretty tall (5’11”) and offer great resort style comfort in my long abdomen for my babies.  No wonder they like to stay in and develop as long as possible.  It’s like they’re floating down the lazy river for 9 months at a high class pool resort.  Lucky them.

I know 8’6″ isn’t huge……but it’s still a pretty big baby.  Just check out the thighs on that little lady.  She came out with those yummy little rolls.  Oooh, I still remember that sweet day.

And then this guy……they didn’t even put him in newborn diapers.  And all the nurses came in to see the 10 pound baby.  Excuse me………9’10”.  Ha!  Just looking at this picture makes me want to scoop him up and smother him with kisses all over again.  Oh, that little squishy belly.  Ahhhhh……..

.

Can I tell you something that may knock your socks off?  I weighed 12 pounds, 2 ounces when I was born……and came out 3 weeks early.  My poor momma.  I was her biggest and her last baby.  Her doctor took me out early, via C-section, because she looked miserable.  I wish my doctor thought I looked miserable and would induce me already.  But that’s another story, bless his little heart.  Ugh.
(If you want to hear more of how my mother earned her angel wings carrying around 7 hefty babies………the short version is that 5 out of her 7 children weighed 10 pounds or more.  And the others weren’t lightweights either.  And to put your curious mind at ease, most of us were delivered C-section.)

But just check out this chunk-a-lunk of a baby.  Yep, that’s me.  Ha!  (It’s okay to laugh…..me and my siblings always did growing up.)  In my defense, my mom said I lost a pound of water within the first day.  My poor little swollen face.  I barely have eyes, they are so smashed from those chubby cheeks.

(I let my little boy see this picture and he said, “You was cranky mommy!”
Ha……I guess it looks that way!)

Don’t worry, my face stretched out a bit by the time I was 6 months.  (Or is this 8 months?  My mom will be here soon, I’ll have to ask her.)  But I still had those little rolls………probably until I started walking.
Did your moms put little single curls on the top of your head, like mine did?

And excuse the ripped/tattered pictures.
I mutilated a lot of my baby pictures when I was a little girl, without my mom knowing.  Oops.

Anyway, I’m okay with waiting (well, depending on which moment you ask me)…….as long as she finishes developing just like she needs to.  Little chunky monkey.
So, all in fun……..my husband and I have a friendly little bet.
We have made guesses as to how big this baby will be.
(Image source of baby and dog picture: Google Images.  Nope, not my actual baby.)
My guess is 10 pounds, 2 ounces and my husband’s is 10 pounds, 4 ounces.
Whoever wins between the 2 of us (or guesses the closest) will be able to make a purchase of some sort.  Who knows what…
But maybe the winner should be off dinner/dish/diaper duty for a month.
Unless I lose…..then that bet is off.  Ha.
We shall see really soon.
But whatever size she comes out, and whenever she decides to make her grand appearance……..she will be spoiled with snuggles by her momma (and her daddy will most likely be fighting me off for equal turns).  I love these roley-poley little babies that I get to love and squeeze on.  And have I mentioned that I melt at the scent of a brand new baby?
Awwww, I can’t wait.
Okay, enough with all of the baby talk.  I just can’t think of much else these days.  Wish us luck.  Or even better, throw a few prayers our way…….especially the kinds of prayers that assist in a sooner-rather-than-later delivery.

You know, so that I don’t actually deliver a linebacker. ;)

(Back to normal posting tomorrow.  Unless of course…..well, I don’t want to jinx myself.)

  2. Maureen says:

All 3 of my babies were 10 lbs (or more) My first son was 10 lbs 5 oz, my daughter 10 lbs 9 oz and my last was the smallest at 10 lbs on the nose! 10 lb babies arent that bad. I went au natreal for all of them!

  3. A Full House says:

Congratulations on your baby girl!! I just wanted to share with you that I too had an 11 pound (10lbs 3 3/4 oz) baby girl. I went into early labor on Valentines Day! How excited we were to have a Valentine baby. Well our baby girl had other plans, my contractions stopped…and she was born on March 6th. She is now a beautiful 15 year old, so tall and thin. When she was born my OBGYN called her a truck and a friend compared her to the 11pound turkey in her freezer. :( Delivering an 11 pound baby didn't scare me too much… I had one more after her; A 10'7oz baby boy!

  4. Lesley says:

congratulations on your new baby! She is surely a peach!

  5. Giles Fam says:

oh congrats, Ashley!! And Johnston family! I can't believe you had an 11 pound baby! You are wonder woman for sure! Glad everything went well. You and baby look beautiful! (what did you end up naming her?)

  6. Nick Ashley Reagan Coen & Ike says:

I was due on Feb. 28th too, but I didn't have mine until the 8th! Although, you win with the weight! Congrats on your sweet baby!

  7. Jessica from Daisydotdesign.blogspot.com says:

Those weights just make me cringe! My first was 6lbs 12ounces, and I felt like she was getting stuck and was never going to coem out. You and you're mother are wonder WOMEN!!! I hope you get to deliver soon and get to cuddle up those cute little rolls of a baby you are bound to have. Love it, no scrawny one for you, mine was a little bit that way at first. Can't wait to see the cute pictures to come!!

  8. Tina Michelle says:

wow, you do have bigger babies. I hope she comes out soon and you can relax a bit and enjoy her sweetness. I love that pic of you as a newborn.

  9. bamabug01 says:

    9 blbs 10 ozs… Good Luck!

  10. Julie says:

Wow! I read a comment at the very bottom berating everyone for their mention of due dates, or of how it's hard for a woman to deliver a large baby as opposed to a smaller baby. Every woman's body is different…and there are woman who regardless of the fact that they are a WOMAN cannot physically give birth to a baby over a particular size. If you don't believe that, then why have so many women died in childbirth? Obviously there are many reasons, but my husband would not be alive were it not for c-sections.

I am so so sorry to the writer of this blog if I have used your blog comments as a platform. Not at all what I intended. Good luck and many prayers are coming your way for a safe delvery and healthy baby girl!

Your crafts are awesome and I love perusing your blog for inspiration! Take a break and enjoy the newest little one soon to arrive :)

  11. Julie says:

Thinking about you and hoping things go well with your delivery…I just had an 11 lb baby boy in November and by far that was my easiest delivery!

  12. The Webbs says:

i love these posts!! you were a beautiful baby, i love chunky babies!!!

  13. Anonymous says:

Oh, I'll pray for you! Any mom who has gone over her due date can empathize with you. I didn't go over my due date with my 3rd, but I wanted him to come so badly on 08/08/08! I was convinced he'd come that day. So when that day came and went, I was devastated (those pregnancy hormones were in high gear). On 08/13/08 he finally came and all was forgiven. 9 lbs 1 oz.

  14. Tiffany says:

I was at work when I read this story and it made me smile and chuckle a bit too. It was sweet. Good luck and best wishes! your blog is chocked full of inspiration. And the fact that our daughters are the same size, well thats just make it mo' better!

  15. fabricpaintandglue.blogspot.com says:

I was thinking about you today as I was making yoga skirts for my girl and wondering if you'd had your baby. As a mom of 4 I wish you the best and hope every thing goes smoothly.

  16. Stacie says:

oh goodness I love chunky babies. I had a 8 lb 11 oz baby and weighted in at 150 the day she was born. before baby heidi i was 100lbs I had a very healthy baby. :) and did it all natural but with an epidural!

  17. Brenda says:

There are so many opinions and only the one's you want to keep count. I hope your baby's birth is gentle for both of you and an experience to remember. God bless

  18. Crystal says:

To the commenters: A "due date" is not an expiration date ladies! It is officially called an ESTIMATED Date of Delivery or E.D.D. for short. It is not the end; it is in fact, the MIDDLE. Only 50% of women will spontaneously go into labor on or before their "due date," leaving the other 50% to carry up to two weeks after (some even longer). It is only an average with two weeks on either side considered acceptable. It would do all women well to focus more on a due "season" or month instead of on some arbitrary date. It would save us so much grief! As a rule of thumb, IF I tell my family and friends when I am due, I calculate an extra two weeks onto the official date and present the new calculation as *the* due date (or I give a season or month with no specific date attached). This enables me to escape the horrid comments of "I can't believe you're still pregnant!" "Haven't you had that baby yet?" "OMGsh you're so big/huge?" etc. If you tell yourself that your due date is two weeks later than it is and you get to the one the doctor told you, it's not as big of a deal if you're still pregnant because you've been telling yourself the entire pregnancy your due date was later than that. And what a relief to have labor happen four weeks earlier than you've been telling yourself (but you're still full term because your DD was two weeks later!) It's a very simple trick to help ease the worst time of pregnancy for most women – the impatient I-want-my-baby-already stage and helps to avoid what I call unnecessareans (unnecessary Cesarean section)!

On the subject of size, I agree entirely with the commenter who stated that a vagina was meant to give birth! WOMAN was designed to give birth. It's what your body was made for. It is almost completely irrelevant how big or small the baby is (or you for that matter), the body does the same thing. The tissues in the birth canal are extremely elastic and can stretch just as easily to accommodate 12 lbs or 6 lbs. And unless you (or your mother when she was pregnant with you) have been malnourished, YOUR HIPS ARE BIG ENOUGH! :O) During natural birth the muscles and ligaments relax and stretch and actually move allowing for your bones to open to pass a larger child through an otherwise narrow passage. A 4'8" woman can birth a child just as big or bigger as easily as a 6'4" woman. It's in the beauty of God's design of women.

Birth is a beautiful, life-changing, and miraculous partnership with Deity. It is also a very common, every-day event. You're not a superhero no matter the size of your baby or abdomen. You are a woman. Women have been having babies since the beginning of the human species. The mothers who came before us gave birth the way God/Nature intended. We have so much fear and anxiety toward birth now because of the interventions that cause complications, that cause more interventions, that cause more complications. Birth is as normal and natural as the act of conception, as the act of elimination, as the act of breathing. You don't "think" about those activities, they are instinctual – as birth should be. Surrender to the beauty of your creation and draw on the strength of millenia of mothers who've gone before you and birth instinctively. It is glorious!!!

Happy birthing Ashley. The last little wait is truly the hardest, but it's for the best interest for you and your baby to wait until she's ready for birth to begin. Resist the temptation to schedule an induction (or worse, a Cesarean). And next time just lie to everyone! :O) Tell them two weeks later for your due date to eliminate all the pressure at the end.

    HAPPY BABYMOON!

  19. Sophie says:

I'm so happy for you! You must not have jinxed yourself because you haven't posted in a few days!

  20. Heimer says:

I feel for you! I was due March 1st and am still waiting for my little guy to come! I will keep my fingers crossed for you if you keep yours crossed for me! Good Luck!

  21. Annie says:

Oh my goodness. I know how it feels to go longer than your due date. I'm not sure I want to know the due date ever again. Just a general end of this month/beginning of that month. Best of luck with a safe and happy delivery. I really hope for your sake that you have no post up tomorrow and that you're in the hospital (or wherever you deliver) kissing and loving on that sweet little lady.

  22. You can do it 2 says:

wow you poor girl! I'm going to guess this one will be a good 9'8. Good luck!

  23. Anonymous says:

Well I hope you have your baby soon! Good luck! I'll have to admit I'm jealous of any lady that can carry a baby to term. I've had 2 preemies and lost 2. We've spent countless hours in the NICU 200 miles away from home. I so long for a healthy baby but I'm just happy to have my beautiful kids. So congratulations on a healthy baby whenever she decides to make her entrance into this world. In the meantime kick those feet back and sip on some strawberry lemonade!

  24. annielnb says:

I truly feel for you, empathy here…we have six kids, 5 girls and a boy, our smallest was our 4th daughter at 8lbs 14oz, and our largest was our 5th daughter weighing in at a whopping 12lbs 8oz, and yes, she was born without drugs, naturally (she was 8 days late, and when she decided she was ready to make her grand entrance, she wasn't waiting around for some pokey anaesthesiologist to get around to an epidural! lol! She ended up spending a couple days in the NICU for some breathing problems, and it was soooo funny seeing this 12& 1/2 lb baby next to all these precious teensy preemies….now she's six and the willowy one of the bunch, go figure!). I've been lurking, and never commented until now, but I just have to add how much I enjoy your blog!! You're in my thoughts and prayers….. :-)

  25. Kristen Duke Photography says:

you are a beautiful baby! maybe you already had the baby….i may need to email you again later if you are in a whirlwind. my sis in law was a week late and then her platelets were too low (and dangerous) for an epidural, so she delivered her 11 pound, 12 ounce baby on her own, vaginally.

  26. Momma CupKate says:

My kids were both nearly 10 pounds. And FYI, I don't do epidurals! Now at 2 months, my daughter is about the size ( and development) of a six month old!

    Hope yours comes soon!

  27. mamabecker says:

Hope she makes her appearance soon! My newest little man, now 2 months old, decided to grace us 2 weeks and 4 days after his due date! Thankfully though, he was only 7lbs 9oz! Praying you won't have to wait that long!

  28. Megan King says:

You are superwoman!!! And going 1 minute overdue is so hard. I was 5 days over with my first and the second is coming sometime in the next 6-7 weeks so we'll see when she arrives. Good luck!!! You are in our prayers!

  29. Sessions says:

Ashley? I have bene wondering how you guys are doing these days. I guess now I know…I pray that everything went well or is going well with the delivery of your baby that is so exciting!!!

  30. Krista says:

Praying for safe delivery! I was 11 13 via c-section. My two boys…. well, the first one I weighed a LOT more than I do now… he was 9 11. The second one I only gained 35 lbs with him and he came out 4 months ago at 11 5! As of last month he was 17 13, so I can relate to the big babies :) We call our newest "butterbean" :) (both were 3 weeks early too…..) Good luck with this one!

  31. SchultzMomma says:

My babies were: 8lbs, 5oz girl, 9lb 1oz boy & the last one ended up being my smallest- 8lbs, 3oz. – even though she was 10 days past due. Best wishes for a speedy delivery. BTW I love your blog!

  32. Anonymous says:

I feel for you. My due date was Feb. 26 and we are still waiting on our baby as well. People keep telling me to "just be patient; no one has been pregnant forever" but when you are anxiously waiting (and tired of being uncomfortable) it's hard to be patient.

  33. Sheralee says:

I totally know how you feel. My first son was 9'12, but then both my girls weighed around 8 lbs, so you never know this baby could be smaller. But, anyway, I know you can do it!
You should go get a pedicure. It put me into labor with my first two, and even if it doesn't work, it feels so good and you'll have cute toes for the delivery.

  34. Missi says:

My guess is 1 ounce shy of 10 pounds! That is what my 3rd child was. She was such a cutie with all her delicious chunkiness! I sure didn't enjoy carrying her though, my hips would dislocate when I tried to roll over at night. My husband had to get out of bed and "forklift" me every time I needed to roll over! Hope your "liitle" one comes SOON!

  35. Ryan and Rebekah says:

I was you one year ago. I was hoping for a February baby too. She came March 6, one week over due. My son is born on the 5th. We went bowling for his two year old birthday party and she was born the next day. Just a suggestion, if you want baby out.

  36. Terese says:

I just discovered your blog and think it is so great. I wish you all the best with your baby, and if you're like me you'll have a 10pounder. My babies were similar to yours, first (boy) 9-2, second (girl) 8-6, third (boy) 10-6. All vaginal deliveries and all born a few days before the due date. So yep, I think a 10pounder. Good Luck!

  37. Kim Eppley says:

My guess is 10 lbs, 5 oz, but I'm hoping for 7 lbs so it's easier on you! Healthy is all I really hope for. GOOD LUCK!

  38. Amy, Jeff, Morgan and Keira says:

My first was also 8lbs 6oz, but she was an induction 4 weeks early (medical reasons for me).

My second was induced 2 weeks early (same medical reasons for me) and she was 10lbs 2oz. She also looked like a Sumo wrestler when she came out. Super puffy face!

    Good luck!

  39. Jen says:

I so know how you feel, Stan was 2 weeks late when he was born, he was 9.10 and 22inches when he came out (c-section). McKenna was on time at 8.10 and 21 inches (C-section). And Little Miss Evy came 3 weeks early and she was my peanut at 6.7 and 21inches (c-section again). Thinking of you hopefully your little lady makes her debut this week! And that everything goes well!

  40. Tammy says:

    Wow!!
    #1 – 6lb 7oz
    #2 – 8lb 2oz
    #3 – 9lb 5oz
    #4 – 11lb!!!
and …… scene…..!!!! NO MORE!! btw, #1 was 5.5 weeks early, so he would have been a BEAST!! #4 – the dr. said his guess was 9lb ? WHAT??? He was WAY OFF!!! She was a c-section and she came out butt first. He said, 'she has a big butt', then she pooped on him!! HAHA!!! So now the family joke is, 'don't tell a girl she has a big butt, or she'll poop on you!' HAHA!!

  41. Rob-O says:

Wait Ash. I thought Jordan was 12'2 and you were 12'6 or 12'9. I just remember mom commenting that you were almost 13lbs… now this makes me want to double check to see if I have been telling people the wrong facts…..

  42. Stephanie says:

Sending prayers and well-wishes your way. Hope she comes sooner than later!

  43. Katrina says:

I was 12 lbs. too! Amazing! I've never met anyone who was as big as I was.

I also have some big babies who like to come LATE. Being tall probably accomodates them better, but it's not much help at your stage. Good-luck, sweet lady. She'll be here soon enough.

  44. Clair says:

ooooohhhh.. How exciting! Sending lots of love your way..I hope all goes well for you xxx

Oh, just realised I think this is the first time I've commented on your blog – I'm usually just a stalker :o)

    Clair

  45. Lady Multi-Tasker says:

I feel your pain! My first two were averaged sized baby girls, 7.2 and 7.9, both induced before their due date. Then came my third girl, 6 days late – 8.9. Big but still not huge. Seven months ago today I gave birth to our first son, 4 days after his due date, 10 lbs 8 ounces! A whopper of a surprise and the answer to all my discomfort! LOL Today he weighs 20lbs, only 4 lbs less than his 2 yr old sister!

Can't wait to hear all about the birth of your new baby girl!

  46. Danae says:

When I was born– back in the days before ultrasounds, obviously– the doctor who delivered me famously said, "Look at those shoulders! He's going to be a football player!" and then the rest of me came out, and suffice it to say I was not destined to play football… I'm not even sure I'd want a 10 pound baby! Yikes! My baby turns 2 in a couple of weeks. She's awfully sweet, but I'm already missing those newborn days! Enjoy! (Not this part– the last couple weeks of pregnancy are nothing but miserable…but soon enough you'll have a sweet, sleepy little baby to snuggle. That's the part you should enjoy lots!)

  47. Melissa says:

I can SOOO relate to your post. My first three (each induced at around 1 week early) weighed 9 lbs. 9 oz, 7 lbs. 14 oz. (still trying to figure out whose she is) and 10 lbs. 9 oz. I went four days over with my last, being determined to go into labor on my own at least once, and she was only 9 lbs. 14 oz. So here's the thing- 10 lbs. 9 oz. wasn't really that much harder to push out than anybody else. That seven pounder though- I will say that was quite a breeze….

  48. Shirley says:

Love your baby picture!!! I hope this one decides to make a grand entrance soon! Good luck!

  49. kate says:

those last days are the longest days ever….i feel for you!…my guess is 10 lbs 3 oz….
my first baby was 6 lbs 9 oz…my last was 10 lbs (total of 5 kids)…they do get bigger and bigger!

  50. Jim says:

1 was 9 lbs 6 oz…2 was 10 lbs 8 oz (and he was out in 10 minutes). I too have that resort style abdomen. Both are all slim and tall now–I wish I could say the same for me :-). Good luck!!

  51. Danette Mahana says:

Oh my heck Ash that picture of you is HILARIOUS!!! So cute! I don't think it is fair for the 3rd baby to come AFTER the due date. It still makes me grumpy to think about Jordan coming 3 days late. I will pray for your little lady's quick and timely arrival. I can't wait to see her, your babies are always so beautiful, but then again there is a great gene pool to draw from in the Johnston home.

  52. Yettiebug says:

I'm with you. My 3rd baby was 12 lbs 4 oz. We were expecting him to be 10 lbs. We were the talk of the waiting room and the nurses station. LOL Hope all goes well with you!

  53. Rachael says:

I had two average size babies (b/t 7-8 lbs) and I can't imagine carrying babies that size. (But I'm short, too) so kudos to you! I know this is hard to do, but just hang in there and TRY to get comfortable…you know, if you can.

Just think, you'll be cuddling that sweet baby before you know it.

  54. Val says:

Oh boy, my Punky Bear was 6 weeks early and 3lbs and 7oz. But you know, the day she developed thigh rolls (around 5 or 6 months), I called EVERYBODY! I was so excited!

Here's to your Momma and to you, brave women who carry big, healthy babies…and good luck and many blessings on you, your family, and your deliciously squishy new bebe'.

  55. Misty says:

My co-worker's wife had a 10.5 boy, natural, 1 day early! (Her first)He was the talk of the hospital!

  56. Aliya45 says:

Aww I'm due April 12th. My last baby was 8lbs 15oz and she broke her clavical on the way out. I'm afraid this one will be a mongo baby too. I'm getting an ultrasound next week to estimate his size. If hes large I'm going for a C section.
    Good luck to ya girl!!

  57. Michelle says:

    Good luck–you will do great!

  58. Sharon says:

All 3 of mine were 8'1, 8'2, and 8'3 (but not it that order). However, I didn't quite gain the same with all three . . . . or did I?? I gained EXACTLY the same with the first 2 and I quit counting about a month out with the 3rd at that same number . . . .

Can't wait to meet her and I'm sure you can't either. Enjoy kissing all those rolls!!!

  59. Tiffany says:

I wish you the best for a quick and safe delivery!
I love chubby babies, mine were 7 14, 9 14, and 9 6, they barely got to wear any of their super cute newborn outfits!

  60. Amanda says:

    Good luck!!
If you want to make your little one come sooner, try some Eggplant Parmesan…. (Check out this website for the recipe, full story, and lots of eggplant baby pictures)

  61. Caroline says:

Big babies run on my husband's side of the family. He was a 12 lb baby also (his uncle was 14 lbs)…Eek! I thought my first was big for being 3 weeks early (7 lbs 9 oz), but when #2 arrived 3 weeks early and 8 lbs 9oz, I was VERY thankful that he didn't get cozy in there until his due date!

  62. Michele says:

You're so close! My "toddlers" were induced. I kind of thought it was neat not to have tiny, little fragile babies that I could break. My kids looked sturdy at birth! LOL! Your little (yep, she'll still be little) bundle of joy will be in your arms soon. Get some sleep!

  63. Katie Call says:

I hope this isn't discouraging, but we're just about on track! My first girl was 8 lbs 2 oz, my second girl was 9 lbs 12 oz, and my son was 11 lbs even! I was about 5 days overdue with my first and third, with my second a planned section 4 days before my due date. Way to stay strong and wait it out! No matter how big she is, you're doing the right thing! Best of luck!

  64. Pam says:

I wish you and your family all the best. I hope she comes soon. I agree with you, there is nothing better than the smell and feel of a little (or big) newborn.

  65. Stephanie says:

Hopefully she comes soon! My money's on your guess with the weight.

  66. kodie says:

my Dr. thought my first was going to be a 10 pounder from the ultrasound 3 weeks before her due date, so she decided to induce me. baby was born 10 days early and weighed 6lbs, 12oz. not even close. i had a very difficult pregnancy with my second and had weekly ultrasounds to track her development. when they had to take her by emergency c-section 3 weeks early, she turned out to be just fine at 7 lbs. so who knows!

I just delivered my fifth. All girls…all c-section…and my biggest was 7lbs 5oz. I can't imagine much more:) Good luck…you're in our prayers for quick and easy.

I wish you the best of luck! the waiting games is the hardest. Mine were 8'9, 9'4 and 8'12. So they were pretty big too!

  69. Judy says:

I know how you feel. My first was 9 lb 10 oz, 6 days late. My 2nd was 9 lb 3 oz, one day late. My 3rd is due in 4 weeks and if he stays in like the others I'm sure he'll be huge too. But they are more sturdy that way I guess. Good luck on delivering soon, I'm feeling ready to be done too and I'm not even considered full term yet.
