An Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt — with HATCHIMALS (…printable clues included!!)

One of my very favorite Easter traditions as a little girl, was getting a beautifully sewn homemade dress, brand new lace-trimmed bobby socks, and some sort of Easter hat to match.  I lived for those days….dressing up in my very newest outfit, every Easter Sunday!  But a very close second (if not tied for first)…..was receiving an Easter basket, full of goodies, eggs, and small gifts.  I could hardly wait to crack open all those colorful plastic eggs and dig to the very bottom of the plastic Easter grass, to see what was hiding way down there.  And you know, my kids have caught the bug…..and love it probably just as much!

And because Easter traditions and I are such great friends…..I couldn’t turn down the offer from Spin Master to test out the new Season 2 Hatchimals CollEGGtibles!  (Thanks Spin Master for sponoring this post!)  Have you guys seen these teeny tiny little hatching eggs?!  Chloe (who’s 7) just received her own full size Hatchimal (actually twins) for Christmas this past year and all the kids play with those lovable little fur balls!  But these little mini eggs are much smaller but their outer shells actually hatch (after you rub them and warm them up)…..and out comes these tiny little animal figurines, that my kids are now officially obsessed with!

But before I let the kids hold, touch, or even test them out (I actually never even told them I had them)…..I created an EASTER EGG SCAVENGER HUNT, to make the whole process even more fun!  And then I sent them around the entire house looking for each of the clues, which they always LOVE, but it also makes it more exciting!  And I made the clues generic enough for anyone to use….so if you’d like to use them for your own scavenger hunt, I will share those printables down below.

But before I get into the scavenger hunt details, let me show you just how cute these little Hatchimals Colleggtibles are…..and how they actually work, because these little eggs are seriously so much fun!  But be warned….your kids will most become obsessed with them!!!!

So they start out as little eggs, completely disguised, other than a few speckles on the shell (which is a clue to which “family” they belong to).  But, all of the hearts on the shell are dark purple.

  • Save

To help your egg hatch, you have to give the eggs some love by rubbing the purple heart until it turns a bright pink.  (This helps the egg warm up, making it ready for “hatching”).  My kids love this part though, because they think they are like a momma hen, sitting on her eggs until they’re ready to hatch.  Haha!  It’s actually a pretty clever idea.

Once the heart turns a bright pink, it’s ready for hatching.  All you do is apply pressure with your thumb, right where the heart is, and the egg will crack open.

Then, Oliver’s favorite part….picking away at the egg shell, helping his little “baby animal friend” to get out!

With every egg that Oliver hatched, he was so pleased with himself!  It really was the cutest thing to watch!  He would say things like “…oh, look at this little guy!  He’s blue.  And has horns.  Oooooh, look mommy!  He’s so CUTE!”

Ha!  Seriously, he was so fun to watch!

And in case you’re wondering, even Ellie (who’s 11 now), had an absolute ball doing this!

  • Save

She picked away at the shell, always hoping for a little Hatchimal that would match the family of the ones she already had.  Or better yet, a limited edition character!

  • Save

She especially loves that the bottom of the egg shell is a little stiffer and actually turns into a little nest for the Hatchimals CollEGGtible to sit in.  She keeps every single one!

But let me tell you what…..once these kids started hatching their eggs, they couldn’t stop.  It was quite the process to watch all of their Hatchimals CollEGGtibles be hatched!

The most exciting part for Connor and Ellie both, was figuring out Hatchimals CollEGGtible they had, what family they belonged to, and just how “rare” they were.

  • Save

Ellie just about flipped out when she realized she had a “limited edition” called Magical Budgiby….and that it was kinda fuzzy, when the others are all smooth.  Ha!

  • Save

Ellie just informed me that she now knows what to spend some of her birthday money on, that she’s been saving since December.  Yep, more Hatchimals CollEGGtibles! Ha!

  • Save

Chloe and Oliver then wanted to be like the bigger two kiddos and started searching through the checklist of all the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles, to figure out their names and what kind of animal they each were.

  • Save

I especially loved that Oliver was interested in this….because that’s a great skill for him to practice, to match a 3D object with a 2D one.  It’s kinda tricky for a 3-year-old, but he is starting to get it!

Okay, so the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles comes in single packs, double packs, 4 packs, and even egg cartons of 12!  (You can see all of the Hatchimals CollEGGtible sizes HERE.)

We even got a special spring basket of Hatchimals CollEGGtibles.  Such a happy carrier!

I especially love that some of the cases double as a storage case because, well, I’m a mom….and that’s my favorite part! ;)

Aren’t those just the cutest though?!?!  And what a happy surprise too….because without trying it, I never would have predicted how much fun my kids would have had with them!  The whole “surprise toy” phenomenon is real you guys, and this might be our favorite one yet! :)

. . . . .

Okay, now let’s take a few steps back and let me share more about the SCAVENGER HUNT that I created for my kids to actually “earn” their prizes!  So, my kids knew nothing about the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles.  All I told them was that we were having an early Easter Scavenger Hunt, which they were definitely okay with!  So I set out their baskets a few mornings ago, put up some of our Easter decorations…..and placed the first clue by their baskets for them to find and figure out as a group.  (You could easily do this for a single child….or even make up separate clues for each child.  It’s up to you!)

This is what the first clue said…

So they headed to the kitchen and started looking around the stove and counters…..but finally opened the drawer to the frying pans and found their next clue!  (With every clue, I put 2 Hatchimals CollEGGtible eggs and 2 plastic eggs with candy….so that everyone got something.  And every other clue, they switched who got what.)

This is what the 2nd clue said…

And right at that moment, we heard baby Max fussing on the monitor.  Perfect timing, so that they could search for the next clue!

This is what the 3rd clue said…

They figured right away that they should be looking under a couch, but they weren’t sure which one.  They finally found the next clue under the media room couch!

This is what the 4th clue said…

This one was kind of tricky for them.  They looked under all the rugs inside and then all the bath mats…..and then were stumped.  They started asking me if was a bath towel or maybe work boots.  Ha…..I love a tricky one!  I finally gave them a hint that it was outside.

This is what the 5th clue said…

They ran straight away for the washing machine!

This is what the 6th clue said…

First they thought they should go look in the media room but then I think it was Connor mentioned the speaker where we listen to music really loud while doing our “after dinner” chores.  Bingo!!!

This is what the 7th clue said…

  • Save

I wasn’t sure they’d know this one, since I haven’t worn these shoes in a very long time, but I think it was Chloe who remembered!  (Probably because she likes to try them on and clunk around my closet in them!) :)

This is what the 8th clue said…

Right to the kid cup cupboard!  Easy peasy. And the eggs were hidden under the cups.

This is what the 9th clue said…

They figured out pretty quickly that they needed to head to the shower!

This is what the 10th (and final) clue said…

Once they read the word “jump”….they knew they needed to head out to the trampoline!

  • Save

And that’s where they found this…..

…..with a final message!!

Ellie, Connor, Chloe, and Oliver were all so excited for their final surprise….which was a basket stuffed with more Hatchimals CollEGGtibles!!

You guys, no joke, these have become a new favorite toy around here!  And there’s something for everyone because while some of my kids enjoy the hatching and “collectible” part of it…..others really love the “pretend play” part of having little toy animals.  So. Much. Fun!

Thanks again Spin Master, for creating such a fun toy…and for sending some along for my little rascals to try out!  We truly enjoyed them!!!
